In 1930, Soviet avant-garde film director Sergei Eisenstein travelled to Mexico to start a film project known as “¡Que viva México!”. Upon the recommendation of Charlie Chaplin, Eisenstein had secured funding from the successful American socialist novelist Upton Sinclair. During his trip, he shot dozens of hours of footage for what was planned to be a multi-chapter film about the history of Mexico, but funds were soon exhausted and Eisenstein’s chances of finishing the film himself were further diminished by his inability to obtain an extension to his permission to remain away from the Soviet Union. Much of the footage was brought back to the US by the producers, and Eisenstein never completed his work.

Eisenstein intended to make a film symphony, a film serape or Diego Rivera Mural of the seventh art. 'I wanted to show a timeless Mexico where the past was merged with the present'; but the shooting stopped abruptly because the funding was cut, and although they promised to send the material, never received it and he died without being able to conclude with his own hands one of his great works.

Of all the beautiful images captured by Eisenstein in Mexico, some of the most fascinating involve dance. This footage portrays dancers in ecstasy.

FIESTA OF THE VIRGIN OF GUADALUPE: CAMERA ROLL EXCERPTS

1930, 6’

Eisenstein shows us a group of pilgrims of the celebrations of the Virgin of Guadalupe who aim to make a pilgrimage – while dancing – to the place of veneration of the Virgin. What we see are brief fragmentary views exquisitely captured by cameraman Tissé and shown in the sequence order as photographed.

DEATH DAY

1931-1934, 15’

This short subject focuses on the Day of the Dead festivities and is an homage to the artist José Guadalupe Posada. Though Eisenstein did not edit this film, his exquisite sense of Mexico and its people, culture and traditions is clear.

EXPRESSO TRANSATLÂNTICO

Expresso Transatlântico

Expresso Transatlântico is a musical journey that started with Sebastião Varela, Rafael Matos and Gaspar Varela, three young men from Lisbon.

More than family and great friends, they have created a sintony we can capture through their music. They debuted in December 2021 when releasing their first EP and performed in Lisbon with great success. Their first album, highly anticipated by the public and media, was released “Ressaca Bailada”.

Strongly influenced by Portuguese, African and Brazilian music, Expresso Transatlântico project expresses their young and fierce way of living in cosmopolitan and multicultural Lisbon.
