SETÚBAL
Fernando de Almeida, 1956, 23'
“Setúbal” is a documentary intent on showing everything that is positive about the city and the municipality as if in a kaleidoscopic vision. Produced under the sponsorship of the Setúbal City Council, it aims at promoting tourism and publicising the work of the “Estado Novo” regime, but, in this case, using a technical and discursive capacity absent from the following two films. The film's script depicts a leisure trip led by a young couple, which already establishes an elaborate narrative feature, particularly when compared to other documentaries from the 1930s.
SETÚBAL AND IT’S INDUSTRIES

PANORAMIC AND MONUMENTAL SETÚBAL
Virgílio Nunes, 1930, excertos, 16’
“Estado Novo” propaganda documentaries, under the tutelage of the Setúbal Initiative Commission’s Propaganda, praised in the beginning of the film (“Choose Portuguese products – thus is the unemployment crisis avoided!”).
In both works, the narration – through intertitles – praises the common people and the joy and contentment of the modest and poor. In a film about industry in the Setúbal region, industrial activities are presented, praising work “where the labourer’s manual skill is evident”. The following work depicts some of the region's main monuments, accompanied by educational and explanatory intertitles using a popular narrative, typical of the "Estado Novo" regime.
